The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
