Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to contest specific rulings made by the official, echoing the system already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
